Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert formally appointed Justice Minister Tzipi Livni of his Kadima party as foreign minister Wednesday, replacing Silvan Shalom, who resigned at the weekend with three other Likud cabinet ministers. Olmert retains control over five ministries: the prime minister’s office, interior, treasury, industry and welfare. Filling out the cabinet will be six other Kadima ministers. Three are new to the cabinet: Zeev Boim as housing minister as well as agriculture minister; Roni Bar-On as science and infrastructure minister; and Yaakov Edri as health minister and minister in charge of developing the Negev and Galilee. Abraham Hirchson received the communications post in addition to his tourism post. Transport Minister Meir Sheetrit added education to his portfolio. Internal Security Minister Gideon Ezra assumed the added role of environmental affairs minister.
