Today’s issues: Erdogan’s alliance, in the child’s true best interest, Putin’s visit to Syria threatens Assad, and it’s time to recognize the Golan.

The Jerusalem Post discusses Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vocal attack on US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and contends that “Erdogan’s attack on Israel and the US is his way of shifting attention away from his many political problems.” The editor argues that it is not the pursuit of liberty for Palestinians that motivates Erdogan, but rather, his objective is to solidify an anti-Israel, anti-US axis, and states: “What is truly incomprehensible is the stance of progressives in the US and Europe who have joined the Erdogan alliance in condemning Trump’s decision. What motivates them to align themselves with nihilistic Islamists against the US president and Israel?”

Haaretz
comments on the difficulties experienced by same-sex couples in Israel in adopting their nonbiological children, and asserts: “A properly run country must formulate a policy that welcomes all types of parenthood. That is the true best interest of any child.”

Yediot Aharonot contends that the purpose of Vladimir Putin’s surprise visit to the Middle East this week was because of difficulties in his efforts to reach a political agreement that would lead to calm in Syria and reinforce Russian accomplishments in the country, and states: “While Russia is interested in reaching a political agreement that would lead to calm in Syria and reinforce the Russian achievements in the country, the Syrian president is refusing to compromise and demanding exclusive control of Syria without any partners.”

Israel Hayom believes that it would have been more significant for Israel if the United States had recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights rather than recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, as it “would not only change the reality, it would also shape it for many years to come, as well as dovetailing with the American interest in stopping Iran from gaining control in the region.” The author argues: “For once, the interests of Israel, the U.S., and the countries of the Arabian Peninsula coincide. All see stopping Iran from gaining more influence in the Middle East as a top priority,” and opines: “A window of opportunity is open, the conditions are right, and now is the time. An American recognition of Israel on the Golan Heights would be a historic contribution by the Trump administration to shaping the Middle East and erecting a stable defense doctrine for the next several years.”
