Today’s issues: Bypassing for safety, the Jerusalem problem, Israel’s problematic provincial defense policy, and Trump, don’t be Obama.

The Jerusalem Post approves of the Cabinet’s intent to green-light Prime Minister Benjamin’s announced plan to increase security on roads in Judea and Samaria, and declares: “All people deserve the better security of good road infrastructure, the appalling lack of which for decades many critics have attributed to the limited budgets available being diverted to the expansion of settlements. Whatever the eventual accommodation with our Palestinian neighbors shall be, in the interim all deserve better road safety on better roads.”

Haaretz decries the three proposals for bills concerning Jerusalem, all of which seek to bolster Jerusalem’s Jewish majority, and asserts: “They are all one-sided, treating the Palestinians as g ame pieces that can be shuttled around in order to reinforce the Jewish majority and improve Israel’s grasp on the city. All three express a total lack of obligation to the Palestinian residents, whose place of residence (but not they themselves, since they are not Israeli citizens) Israel annexed. These Palestinians have a right to receive the same services and infrastructure from the state as West

Yediot Aharonot criticizes Israel’s policy of quasi-deterrence on the northern border, and declares: “what we are seeing here is a provincial defense policy, a false representation of a leadership that barely sees beyond the tip of its nose and is busy putting out fires day and night.” The author argues: “Our political-security echelon isn’t solving or dealing with problems; it’s simply postponing them, passing them on to the next generation,” and adds: “It’s as if everything beyond Hezbollah, Hamas and Iran doesn’t exist. It’s as if the world around us hasn’t changed.”

Israel Hayom declares: “Eight months into the Trump administration, it is time to stop making excuses,” and states: “It is time for the U.S. to stop blaming the Obama administration for everything wrong with U.S. foreign policy while continuing with many of the same terrible policies.”
