The Jerusalem Post comments on the rudeness and lack of dignity at US President Donald Trump’s arrival ceremony in Israel, personified to a large extent by the antics of rogue Likud MK Oren Hazan, who shoved himself into the line of notables “to force the startled Trump into a self-aggrandizing photo-op, known for good reason as a selfie,” and states: “while official Israel is more than adept at staging circumstance, pomp is not on the local menu.”
Haaretz considers the light sentences handed out for negligent homicide to contractors who disregard the safety of their construction workers, and notes the situation is a reflection of the “disregard for worker safety and disrespect for human life on the state’s part.” T he editor notes that while public awareness on the issue of construction accidents has grown, “the necessary change did not trickle down to the authorities responsible for ensuring the well-being of people at the bottom of the construction pyramid.”
Yediot Aharonot contends that the pro-Israel speeches given by President Trump during his recent visit were no more than hot air, and argues: “During his visit, the US president didn’t say anything beyond what he had already told Netanyahu on the prime minister’s visit to Washington, which translates as ‘do whatever you like.’ So is there any wonder that the Right is satisfied?”
Israel Hayom points out that PM Netanyahu and President Trump are on the same page when it comes to the core issues regarding the Israel-Palestinian conflict, and declares: “The coming weeks will show whether Trump is able to achieve the impossible or if nothing has changed in the Middle East.”
Globes believes that Donald Trump’s recent Middle East trip was far from the predicted disaster, but adds: “It used to be said that the Palestinians never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. That maxim will be justly applied to the new administration if it allows itself to concentrate on Israel-Palestine rather than a regional alliance, and if that turns out to be the case, the administration will have ever-weaker protection against the jackals and hyenas circling it in Washington.”
