Yom Hazikaron, memorial day of the fallen Israeli soldiers and the victims of terrorist attacks began on Sunday evening. At the beginning of the commemoration on Sunday evening at 8 pm and on Monday at 11 am, two minute sirens indicated the beginning of the official remembrance nationwide. The memorial day was first held and marked by the then Prime Minister and Defence Minister David Ben Gurion in 1951, on the 4th of Iyar, one day before the celebration of the Independence Day, which starts directly afterwards, this year on Monday evening. The Independence Day of the State of Israel, founded in 1948, is celebrated throughout the country with different events and fireworks.

Israel has closed the border crossings with the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to prevent a possible terrorist attack during the Yom Hazikaron and Independence Day events. The closure, which is the usual procedure before Israeli and High Jewish Holidays began on Saturday evening and will last until Tuesday night. Entry and exiting the West Bank and Gaza will be prohibited in this period, and crossing will only be permitted in cases of „humanitarian, medical or exceptional cases”. However, a special permit from the territorial authorities must be requested.

 

Workers Day was first celebrated on May 1, 1890, that is 127 years ago, and has been celebrated for over a century by workers around the globe. Starting from the 1990s, with the fall of the Socialist block, it became a day of solidarity with the workers. In the big cities of the world trade unions are organizing events in which they focus on the protection of workers’ rights, acceptable wages and pensions, and the preservation of work-places.

 

According to British Prime Minister Theresa May, London insists on guaranteeing the rights of foreign EU citizens living in Britain on a reciprocal basis. As Prime Minister of Britain, May considers it important to take care of Brits in the other 27 countries of the EU. The government wants to safeguard the rights of citizens of other EU member states living in Britain during the post-EU period, but also considers it necessary to apply the principle of reciprocity, namely that the EU Member States will also guarantee the rights of British citizens living there.

 

Valtteri Bottas, the Finnish driver for Mercedes won his first run on Sunday at the Formula One Russian Grand Prix in Sochi. Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari’s German driver came in second, raising his advantage in the total score compared to Lewis Hamilton who came in fourth. Hamilton is a three-time British driver for Mercedes. Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen, Bottas’s compatriot, arrived third.
