Israeli poet and songwriter Haim Hefer passed away at the age of 87. Hefer’s songs were enormously popular and his classics document the history of the State of Israel. Hefer served in the Palmach, the early pre-state strike force. He was also a scriptwriter who wrote for some of the country’s most popular entertainment troupes. Admirers call him a cornerstone of Israeli culture.

Israeli tennis player Amir Weintraub, ranked 214 in the world, described his victory for team Israel over a rival from Japan 150 ranking places above him in Davis Cup play as euphoric. Weintraub’s victory helped return Israel to the Davis Cup World Group. That puts Israel among the top 16 teams on the planet.
