Summary of Editorials from the Hebrew Press

Yediot Aharonot offers that „There has never been a Palestinian leadership so ready for a comprehensive accord with Israel

 – and there has never been a Palestinian leadership so afraid of an accord.  Netanyahu has never been so ready for a peace accord with the Palestinians – and Netanyahu has never been so afraid of an accord.”
Ma’ariv contends that: „The truth about Kadima joining the coalition: Netanyahu does not need her, Livni must not be tempted, and Liberman has nothing to fear from her.  Therefore she will not be called.”
Yisrael Hayom reminds of that „2,596 years have passed since the destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians.  656 years later the Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans.”  The author opines that „We must relate to the Ninth of Av differently, from a day of mourning belonging predominantly to the religious, to a day of Israeli discussion on the meaning of our shared Third Temple.”
The Jerusalem Post contemplates the future of Zionism, and calls on Israel’s leaders to look for additional ways to incorporate, not alienate, fellow Jews. The editor states that „Zionism’s future success is dependent upon its ability to uphold both a broad, inclusive Jewish identity as well as a healthy democracy. The vast majority of Jews must continue to feel comfortable pledging allegiance to a Jewish and democratic State of Israel.”
Haaretz censures the proposed State Budget, which was approved by the cabinet and will now go to the Knesset for further bickering and eventual ratification, and claims that „The ministers’ battle over the state budget is now largely about honor, even though it perpetuates the status quo, and lacks innovation.”
