The paper believes that, “Our failure is the terribly slow pace at which the separation fence and the crossings are being built,” and says that if the fence was being built as close as possible to the Green Line and around the larger settlement blocs, it would be possible to build it much quicker. Hatzofeh says that, “In the country whose affairs are run by US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, the IDF is engaged in small-time actions instead of eliminating terrorism, the air force planes try to frighten birds with sonic booms and the artillery fires into open fields so as not to disturb the neighbors’ rest.” The editors accuse Prime Minister Sharon of reneging on his promises to hit sharply at post-disengagement terrorism and to bar Hamas from participating in the Palestinian Authority elections and assert that, “While Abu Mazen has condemned the attack in order to gain Western sympathy, he has done nothing serious to disarm the terrorist organizations.” __________ Yediot Ahronot, in its second editorial, suggests that were it not for the fact that Syria is disturbing US policy in Iraq, the UN would not have appointed a special investigator to inquire into the murder of Rafik Hariri. The editors say that it is anybody’s guess who, or what type of regime, could replace Bashar Assad in Damascus.
