SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Yediot Ahronot accuses the government of not explaining to the public its motives for eliminating Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. The editors complain that, “We haven’t received any clear and solid explanation and we don’t know how the elimination fits in with the vision for a diplomatic settlement with the Palestinians, how it helps our security or what dangers it entails.”
Hatzofeh notes that today is the 25th anniversary of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty. The editors assert that, “The peace treaty with Egypt was a mistake because of the legitimacy it gave to the nations of the world to sell weapons to it,” and says that, “Egypt’s arsenal of weapons is astounding.” The editors believe that, “The peace treaty with Egypt will not stop Mubarak – or his successor, who will be worse – from threatening Israel and even moving beyond threats,” and accuse the Egyptian military of training for a future war against Israel.
