SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Papers discuss the elimination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin yesterday:
Yediot Ahronot says that “No one is talking about justice. The argument is over the wisdom of the act,” and notes that, “We will wait and see if, after the forty days of mourning, Hamas does weaken or, if after Sheik Yassin’s funeral, as was promised last night in Gaza, ‘the gates of hell will be opened.’” The paper argues that while Hamas perpetrates terror attacks regardless of Israeli actions, the elimination is nevertheless, “likely to awaken all those terrorist bodies that are inspired by Al Qaeda, and to increase the dangers to Israelis.”
Hatzofeh rejoices and says, “We must thank God that we are rid of Sheikh Yassin…He encouraged the terrorist organizations in their destructive and murderous activities.” The paper describes him as, “One of the main and most well known enemies in the international arena, on a par with Bin Laden and others.” The editors urge the security forces to be prepared to defend Israeli citizens from any possible response. The paper congratulates the security services, “who fulfilled their mission as is demanded in service to the people and the state,” and concludes, “All those who hate Israel should meet the same fate.”
Yediot Ahronot, in its second editorial, comments that Israelis woke up to a new reality yesterday morning following the elimination of Sheik Yassin and adds that, “When we go out in the morning, we are scared to death.”
